Confessions of a Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella

Summary :
Rebecca 'Becky' Bloomwood is a shopaholic, a compulsive shopper. She feels the need to buy everything she lays eyes on. In the opening of the book Becky is debating if she should open the letter from her visa card. She thinks she only spend anout 3OO pounds, then she relizes she owes over 9OO pounds. Becky works for a financial savings magazine, which is ironic, because she doesnt know how to save. Her boss asks her to go to this press confrence, and she goes. On becky's way there she saw a 'SALE' sign in a Denny & George store, that hardly ever has sales. So she dicides to go check it out. When she gets in the store a sales woman tells her about the sale and shows Becky the scarf that she comes in and looks at all the time. Becky decides she's going to buy it, so she's at the register and relies she left her credit card at work. Becky asks the sales woman to hold it for her until after the confrence and the woman says yes so Becky goes to the confrence. She ends up buying the 12O quint scarf. ( pounds and quints are european money ]

Quote :
"Ok. DON'T PANIC. Don't Panic. Its only a visa bill." ( Kinsella 5 )

Reaction:
Becky is thinking this right before she opens her visa bill, it shows that she owes a lot of money if she doesnt want to look at the bill. It's obvious that Becky is having serious financial problems. She can not go into a store without buying something. She loves designer items, which makes her addiction even more expensive. Its also obvious that this is an on going problem.

  1. is Becky's addiction shown as humorous, or frightening? What is the reader expected to feel about her huge Visa debt?
